Portraits & process

What photos do you need for a portrait?
I need photos that are as clear and well-lit as possible, with the face visible in detail. I can also work from older photographs, including those of a loved one who has passed away.
How much of the person does a portrait show?
Portraits generally focus on the face and shoulders, and can extend to a bust. This keeps the details of the face in the foreground, where they matter most.
Do you do group portraits?
Yes. For the best result, the people should be close to one another and captured as near to their faces as possible. Groups photographed from a distance require a larger format, which significantly affects the price.
Can I see the work in progress?
Yes. I send you images of the work at each stage, so you can make sure everything is going in the right direction before it is finished.

Techniques & sizes

Which techniques do you work in?
I work in graphite, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, oil, as well as mixed media (for example pastel and graphite, liquid charcoal, water-soluble graphite). For icons I use pigment with egg emulsion.
How do I choose the right technique?
The choice largely comes down to your taste and the effect each medium gives on paper. I can recommend the right option based on what you're looking for.
What sizes are available?
We decide the size together, depending on the subject and your preferences. As a reference, the smallest size I work with is 13×18 cm, and a common format is A4 — but I can also make larger works.

Pricing, timing & payment

How much does a portrait cost?
The price varies depending on the complexity of the photo and the elements included (hands, jewellery, etc.), the technique, and the size. For an exact price, write to me with the details you have in mind.
How long until I receive the work?
It depends on the technique and the number of works already in progress. I'll give you an estimated timeframe when you place the order.
How is payment made?
Payment is made by bank transfer. For works under 1,000 lei, payment is made in full at the start. Above that amount, payment is 50% at the start and 50% on completion. The deposit for commissioned works is non-refundable.

Delivery

How do I receive the work?
The work can be collected in person from my address in Brașov, or shipped by courier.
Does the work come framed?
Works come with a simple black frame and a passepartout. Oil works come with a simple black frame, without a passepartout, and icons are delivered unframed. On request, I can also frame with a special frame — this adds waiting time and the cost of the frame.

Guarantee & authenticity

What if I'm not happy with the result?
Commissioned works are made especially for you, based on your photos and requirements, and along the way I send you images of each stage precisely so that the final result is to your liking. For this reason, the deposit for commissions is non-refundable. A work purchased from stock can be returned within 14 days of receipt.
Are the works one of a kind?
Yes, each work is one of a kind and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Icons

Do you paint icons to order?
Yes, I paint icons on wood, in the traditional technique using pigment and egg emulsion. We can discuss the saint or scene you'd like, as well as the right size.
How much does an icon cost and how long does it take?
The price and timeframe depend on the size, the complexity and detail of the composition, and the number of works already in progress. I'll give you a price and an estimated timeframe once we've settled the details.
Do icons come framed?
Icons are delivered unframed, as they are painted directly on wood.
